The Super Mario Bros. Movie is already one of Nintendo’s (and Illumination’s) biggest hits. Even into its 2nd-weekend theatrical debut, it’s already raking in a lot of moolah. How much moolah, you might ask? Well, enough moolah to make it the 7th top-grossing film of all time. This is counting live-action films into the mix, by the way.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Now in Top 7th Place!
The Hollywood Reporter has just come out with a very interesting piece of news about The Super Mario Bros. Movie for its 2nd opening weekend at the box office. Apparently, Nintendo’s latest attempt to turn their Mario franchise into a film managed to gross $92.5 million USD in the weekend of April 14-16, 2023 by the time Monday rolled around. This already makes the film the highest 2nd weekend-grossing film of all time, beating the previous holder of the title: Frozen II, by $6.6 million USD.
In fact, with that amount of box office gross, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the 7th highest 2nd weekend-grossing film of all time. The film even beats live-action films like Disney’s 2017 live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast and Top Gun Maverick, just to give you an idea of how much money Mario is making.
In fact, here’s the full list of films in that list from Comcast to give you an idea of where The Super Mario Bros. Movie stands:
Top 10 Highest Grossing 2nd Weekend Films
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens, $149.2 million
- Avengers: Endgame, $147.4 million
- Avengers: Infinity War, $114.8 million
- Black Panther, $111.7 million
- Jurassic World, $106.6 million

- The Super Mario Bros. Movie, $92.5 million
- 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, $90.4 million
- Top Gun Maverick, $90 million
- Frozen II, $85.9 million
So despite the middling reviews critics have been leaving it, it’s clear that audiences are more than making up for those reviews. This is on top of The Super Mario Bros. Movie already earning a box office grand total of $692.9 million USD worldwide. The Hollywood Reporter and others are already speculating that this film may soon join the $1 billion gross club. You know, on top of it already being the highest grossing video game film adaptation of all time. Tune back into THS later to find out if this is the case when we do.
