The Super Mario Bros. Movie has only been out for a week now, but it’s already setting records. Besides destroying expectations for a 5 day weekend release last week, now The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the highest-grossing video game film ever. Global earnings have topped $508 million with a $260 million domestic gross and a $248 million international release. The previous record-holder might surprise you, it was Warcraft, which earned $439 million backed up by a massive following in China. Mario Bros. is also the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far, passing up Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
If you haven’t seen The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it follows Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) as they’re transported into the Mushroom Kingdom from Brooklyn. There, they meet all kinds of characters and have to stop Bowser (Jack Black) from destroying the kingdom and marrying Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). Along the way, they meet Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), Cranky Kong (Fred Armisen), and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key).

The song “Peaches” that Bowser sings in the movie has taken the world by storm. The official music video released by Universal and Illumination has over 7.3 million views.
With success like this, it’s a wonder how they haven’t announced a sequel and other spinoffs for the Nintendo-Universal universe. We’ll have to see what the future for Mario holds in film.
