The first three John Wick films took action movies to a whole new level. Now John Wick: Chapter 4 has elevated the franchise as a whole, including the credits. It’s the first film in the series to feature a post-credits scene. That means some people skipped out, missing it entirely. Other people are just a little confused about what’s going on, and what it means. This article explains the John Wick: Chapter 4 post-credits scene, which means there will be spoilers for the movie.
*JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 SPOILERS AHEAD*
The post-credit scene for John Wick: Chapter 4 harkens back to the battle at the Osaka Continental. Caine (Donnie Yen) ended up matched against Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada) and his daughter Akira (Rina Sawayama). While the injured Shimazu put up a valiant fight, he was eventually killed by Caine. Akira was also injured before the confrontation with Caine, but she was still ready to avenge her father. Caine cautioned her against this action, and said he would be waiting for her eventually revenge.
Later on in the film, Akira is with John Wick (Keanu Reeves), telling him that he’s the reason her father is now dead. She insists John kills Caine to avenge her father, or she will take matters into her own hands. While John was friends with Shimazu, he was also close with Caine. By the end of the film, John had not killed Caine, which meant it was up to Akira to exact her own revenge.
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 POST-CREDITS SCENE
In the post-credit scene, Caine is sitting in a public area, listening to his daughter play classical music. This is a time when Caine is most at ease. Mixed in with the crowd, Akira prepares a small-bladed weapon as she approaches Caine’s position. This is when the scene cuts to black.
Akira is primed and ready to avenge her father’s death, but the scene cuts out before she engages Caine directly. This almost certainly means another spin-off featuring Caine and Akira is in the works, or will be soon. While it’s possible this confrontation will happen in John Wick: Chapter 5, if that movie happens at all, it will be several years away as Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski plan to take a break after Chapter 4.
JOHN WICK SPIN-OFFS
There are already two John Wick spin-offs in the works. The first is the Ballerina movie that takes place between John Wick Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, starring Ana de Armas, which is expected to release next year. The other is The Continental, a limited series that will debut on Peacock in the US, and Amazon Prime internationally.
The Continental series will consist of three 90-minute episodes, and will tell the story of how Winston (Ian McShane) rose to power at the New York Continental. Taking place in 1975, John Wick is not part of the series, and younger actors will portray Winston and Charon.
Adding another John Wick spin-off to the mix with Caine and Akira seems like an easy win for Lionsgate. It’s likely Akira’s revenge will be put on hold as the High Table interrupts her assassination attempt to send them both on some sort of mission. If this ends up being the plot of John Wick: Chapter 5, it could even be John that interrupts them, or there’s some urgent matter concerning John that requires both of their attention.
While there’s still a chance this could just be a tease of Akira about to kill Caine. However, both characters have so far been well-liked by audiences. Donnie Yen has been a big crowd favorite, and has wide-reaching international appeal. Since his character survives the film (so far), it would make sense for Lionsgate to want to bring him back, but in order to do so you have to deal with Akira, so she’d likely be along for the ride as well.
