We’ve seen a remake of Psycho, but what about Vertigo?
The classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock movie is getting a remake from Paramount Pictures as a possible starring vehicle for Robert Downey Jr. He’ll be producing the film with his wife, Susan Downey, through their company Team Downey along with John Davis and John Fox with Davis Entertainment.
Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight is writing the script. He’s had a huge week so far with this announcement and yesterday’s news that he’s joining an upcoming Star Wars film as writer.
Vertigo is one of the most beloved and classic films of all time. It starred Jimmy Stewart as John “Scottie” Ferguson, a police detective in San Francisco who retires due to a fear of heights. His fear is brought on by a severe case of vertigo while he’s chasing a suspect. It also stars Kim Novak, who Scottie is hired to tail. Slowly, he obsesses over her, and her fate runs parallel with another girl that Scottie meets.
Although it was not a huge success upon release, Vertigo has gained a cult following over the years. It is now considered a classic in the mystery genre. It has been included in multiple best-of lists, such as AFI and the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound publication, and is regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
News of a remake might not stir the best of feelings among fans of the original. If there’s anyone that can do Jimmy Stewart’s performance justice, it would be Robert Downey Jr.
Team Downey has Perry Mason in Season Two on HBO. Downey is starring in the Park Chan-wook-directed The Sympathizer for A24 and HBO. Davis Entertainment is in post on Harold and the Purple Crayon and Uglies.
