Carmen is a 19th Century French Opera that tells the story of a woman who seduces a soldier, Don José. The storyline follows Don as he abandons his childhood sweetheart, as well as turns his back on his military career. This is all in pursuit of Carmen’s affection.
There have been a handful of adaptations including Carmen: A Hip Hopera for MTV starring Beyonce Knowles and Mekhi Phifer. Now, we have a new reimagining from the mind of Black Swan choreographer, Benjamin Millepied.

CARMEN follows a young and fiercely independent woman who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert following the brutal murder of her mother. Carmen survives a terrifying and dangerous illegal border crossing into the US, only to be confronted by a lawless volunteer border guard. The man cold-bloodedly murders two other immigrants in her group. Then the border guard and his patrol partner, Aidan —a Marine with PTSD—become embroiled in a deadly standoff. So, Carmen and Aidan are forced to escape together. So, they make their way north towards Los Angeles in search of Carmen’s mother’s best friend, the mercurial Masilda (ROSSY DE PALMA) and owner of La Sombra nightclub – a sanctuary of music and dance. Carmen and Aidan find both solace and their unwavering love for one another in the safety of Masilda’s magical refuge, but time is running out as the police hunt closes in.
Starring as Carmen is Melissa Barrera (In the Heights/Scream VI). Starring alongside Barrera is Paul Mescal (Normal People) as Aidan, and Rossy de Palma (Madame). The original Score is by Nicholas Britell with original songs by Nicholas Britell, Julieta Venegas, Taura Stinson, as well as Tracy ‘the D.O.C’ Curry. The screenplay by Benjamin Millepied, Alex Dinelaris, and Loïc Barrère. The film also marks Millepied’s directorial debut.
Carmen is set to his theaters in April 2023!
