The season 3 finale of Netflix’s You left viewers gasping, spinning, screaming, etc. Joe stabs Love with a poison needle, saving himself, and faking his own death. However, Love had convinced Joe’s new fling, Marienne, that he was dangerous. So, she runs off to Europe to get away from him.

So, at the very end of season 3, we see Joe Goldberg has made his way to Europe to start his new life, as well as to try to find Marienne and begin their life together.

A CHANGE OF SCENERY BRINGS NEW LIFE TO SEASON 4 OF YOU

Learning that season 4 of You was heading overseas, I was hesitant, but it also makes perfect sense. Unless Joe (Penn Badgley) wanted to pull a Dexter and move to the middle of nowhere, this really was his only option.

Starting a new life with a new identity allows Joe to feel comfortable and let his guard down. Joe is now going by Professor Moore, and is a University teacher. However, the series doesn’t quite go the predictable way, allowing Joe to pick a random college student to fall for. Instead, he finds himself lumped into the “it” crowd. And as we all know, socialites love their drama.

I love the addition of these new outrageous characters from all over the rich socialite scene. It makes Joe a fish-out-of-water, which we haven’t seen before. Then it’s only compounded by a shocking murder mystery! That’s right! You season 4 part 1 begins with a murder mystery and it’s not Joe. However, someone out there is killing off his socialite friend group one by one…and pinning it on Joe.

You Season 4 flips the entire premise on its head

I love this change so much! We see that Joe is comfortable and creating his new life. However, someone out there in Joe’s new universe knows his true identity! I loved watching the table get turned onto Joe as he tries to figure out who this new version of “you” is, while also trying to save his own skin. This change refreshes season 4 in a way I wasn’t expecting. It almost feels like a brand new series. The cat-and-mouse throughout all of part 1 of season 4 had me sitting on the edge of my seat the entire way through.

That said, Joe will of course have a new love obsession this season, but it’s not necessarily who you’d expect. The dynamic between him and his new “you” is fantastic. He no longer has the upper hand and is taken aback by the power shift. I feel like all this change from location to power dynamics was truly necessary in order to continue to make You feel fun and fresh.

The end of season 4 part 1 ends with a bang! I cannot wait to talk about part 2!

You season 4 will air in two parts on Netflix. Part 1 premieres February 9, 2023 and part 2 on March 9, 2023.
