George A. Romero’s scares are branching into a new genre. The Night of the Living Dead universe is expanding with a new scripted audio series.
The podcast (titled simply The Dead) will tell new stories and expand characters from the Romero-verse. Cinedigm Podcast Network will distribute the show, which will include 24 episodes. Bloody Disgusting co-produces alongside the George A. Romero Foundation.
Romero’s original 1968 film Night of the Living Dead remains one of the most iconic pieces of horror media of all time, with many modern zombie stories citing Romero as a key influence. The movie spawned five sequels, as well as several spinoffs, over the years since its initial release.
“We strive to work with amazing storytellers, and George A. Romero is one of the best to ever bring horror to the screen. Our goal with this project is to introduce and support a new generation of horror writers who are influenced by George, while honoring and preserving his legacy through socially conscious horror,” said Tom Owen, co-founder of Bloody Disgusting.
The Dead will feature stories written by individuals chosen directly by the George A. Romero Foundation via an application process. The podcast will join Bloody Disgusting’s lineup of horror podcasts, which includes both scripted and unscripted content.
“The George A. Romero Foundation is delighted to partner with Bloody Disgusting to foster George’s innovative legacy,” said Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, founder and president of the George A. Romero Foundation. “This unique model opens up new opportunities for writers and encourages their creative spirit. Under the guidance of Bloody Disgusting, I know that the final stories produced will entertain us all.”
