Claire and Jamie’s epic love story is coming to an end. Starz just announced Outlander will officially end with season 8.
The romantic drama will premiere its seventh season this summer. (Specific date still TBA.) The upcoming seventh season will include 16 episodes. The eighth and final season will be a little shorter, coming in at 10 episodes. The popular series will wrap up as the longest-running Starz original show.
“For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at Starz. “But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story.”
Outlander is based on the book series by Diana Gabaldon. The final season will draw from the eighth book in her series, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood. When the Starz series premiered back in 2014, this book was the last Gabaldon had published in the series. However, she’s since written a ninth installment, and plans to conclude Claire and Jamie’s story in a tenth book. (So, Outlander will live on a little longer for book fans.)
Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan play the leads in Outlander. The upcoming seventh season cast also includes Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, John Bell, David Berry, Caitlin O’Ryan, Paul Gorman, Charles Vandervaart, Izzy Meikle-Small, and Joey Phillips.
And though the Outlander series now has an end in sight, the Fraser family will continue to appear on Starz. The network previously announced plans for a prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, about the love story of Jamie’s parents.
Look out for the penultimate season of Outlander this summer. Meanwhile, you can stream the previous six seasons with a subscription on the Starz app.
