A new Tron movie has been rumored for years now, but it appears that Disney is finally making a move. According to Deadline, Joaquim Ronning is in talks to direct Jared Leto in a new Tron film, titled Tron: Ares. Ronning is no stranger to Disney films. He’s directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales for the studio previously. He’s also working on Young Woman and the Sea starring Daisy Ridley.
Tron: Ares is considered a sequel to Tron: Legacy. Jesse Wigutow wrote the script. Other than Jared Leto, there are no other cast members listed right now.
Tron has been a hard one for Disney to crack. The original 1982 film didn’t get much love from the studio until it gained a cult following on cable. It didn’t have a great DVD or Blu-ray release until right around when Tron: Legacy came out in 2010. As for Tron: Legacy, that film grossed $400 million at the box office. Joseph Kosinski directed Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, and Garret Hedlund in that film. With his success with Top Gun: Maverick, it’s a wonder why Disney didn’t come calling again.
