There is certainly a lot to unpack in the official trailer for The Mandalorian Season 3, isn’t there? From more Mandalorians, to Mandalore, to an iconic Imperial star fighter’s return to live action, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are going to throw a ton of content at us in the show’s third season. So do we even start in trying to unravel the secrets within the trailer? Let’s start with the obvious.
We knew from The Book of Boba Fett that Din Djarin would travel to Mandalore. Fans of The Clone Wars knew the Mandalorian home world to be comprised of majestic, domed cities. To see one of those cities utterly destroyed was almost heartbreaking. What Djarin will encounter there remains unclear…. Although, from clips shown at Star Wars Celebration, we do know Bo Katan will be there. Expect there to be a challenge for the Dark Saber, and Mandalore, in The Mandalorian Season 3, for sure.
The Mandalorian Season 3 promises action, and more action
One other thing is certain; we’re going to see a lot of exciting action in the upcoming season. Some that action will see the return of one of the Empire’s most deadly fighters, the TIE Interceptors. I’m old enough to remember how cool those were when I first saw them on the screen in Return of the Jedi. That brief clip in the Mandalorian Season 3 trailer of them hunting down what appears to be Bo Katan’s Gauntlet definitely gave fans the shivers.
Perhaps more interesting is the tease that we’ll learn who rescued baby Yod… er, Grogu from the Jedi temple. In the Mandalorian Season 3 trailer we briefly see the backs of numerous Jedi preparing to defend themselves against the onslaught of Order 66. We of course know that Grogu survives and escapes, but how? If you’ve been paying attention, Grogu’s rescue may very well have been set up in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. In that series we learned that Quinlan Voss also survived Order 66 and had been ferrying force-sensitive folk to safety. Could he be Grogu’s rescuer?
Does Quinlan Vos rescue Grogu?
It makes sense. Vos was a minor character in the Clone Wars series, but featured prominently in the novel Dark Disciple. Granted, Favreau and Filoni have a knack for inserting deep-cut, fan-service cameos and references throughout the live-action series…. But the Quinlan Vos reference in Obi-Wan seemed perhaps a little too specific. If I was a betting man, my guess is that we’ll see Vos in live-action once more. (Remember, he appeared briefly in the background of the Phantom Menace.)
