Looks like school is staying in session. ABC’s comedy Abbott Elementary just scored a season 3 renewal.
ABC revealed the news during its Television Critics Association panel. The announcement comes fresh off the heels of the show’s recent Golden Globe wins. Abbott Elementary won as a series for season 1. It also brought home acting awards for Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams as well.
“This renewal is a richly deserved feather in the cap of Quinta Brunson, Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Randall Einhorn, as well as the rest of the cast and crew of Abbott Elementary,” said WBTV CEO Channing Dungey. “Each week, this talented group of artists celebrates true unsung heroes — public school teachers. And for some extra icing on the renewal cake, our favorite group of teachers was honored this morning with two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations and last night with three Golden Globe Awards. Abbott Elementary is the gift that keeps on giving, and I look forward to many more magnificent episodes of this brilliant, authentic, and just plain funny series.”
Abbott Elementary previously took home three Emmy Awards, and recently nabbed two SAG Award nominations as well. The series comes from creator, executive producer, writer, and star Brunson. The ensemble cast also includes Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, William Stanford Davis, and Sheryl Lee Ralph.
The show is currently airing its second season on ABC. According to Deadline, the series saw a 31% increase in viewership from season 1 to season 2 in the 18-49 demographic. It also averages over 9 million viewers per episode.
New episodes of Abbott Elementary premiere on Wednesdays.
