It seems that the Avatar film series is going to bear more than a passing resemblance to Avatar: The Last Airbender in the future. You know, aside from similarities in name and themes. Especially for the latter, it seems. How else do you explain James Cameron apparently planning to introduce a Na’vi Fire Nation to the series for the third film?

Avatar 3: Attack of the Fire Nation Na’vi?

First Air Nomad Na’vi, then Water Tribe Na’vi, and now Fire Nation Na’vi?!

The French news website 20 Minutes just recently posted an interview with director James Cameron about the future of the Avatar films. Specifically for the upcoming Avatar 3. Unfortunately, the website is entirely in French for obvious reasons, so GamesRadar+ has an English translation for us.

According to GamesRadar+, James Cameron plans to introduce yet another Na’vi tribe to us for Avatar 3. While this new tribe doesn’t have an official name yet, Cameron calls them the “Ash People.” Apparently, they’re going to have fire as their theme, as opposed to the original tribe from the first film having air as their theme, and this new tribe in Avatar: The Way of Water having water as their theme. Not only that, but this Ash People are going to differ from all previous depictions of the Na’vi in being evil instead of good. Apparently, for this particular tribe, Cameron wants to show the moral ambiguity of the Na’vi peoples. And that not all of them are nice, friendly folks. Cameron elaborates further about this below:

In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. But, obviously, everything will depend on how Avatar 2 is received, if it finds its audience.

Then Everything Changed When the Fire Nation Na’vi Attacked?!

I swear, if these Ash People have a Fire Lord as their ruler…

So yeah, evil fire Na’vi people will be in Avatar 3. Is it just me, or does it sound suspiciously like James Cameron wants to have a Pandora version of the Fire Nation in his films? If this is the case, I can’t help but think this is taking a bit too much inspiration from Avatar: The Last Airbender. If these Ash People are industrialized, I’m just going to call them Fire Nation Na’vi. Of course, this is all speculation until we hear anything official from James Cameron. Take it with a grain of salt until then.
