DC Films is going through one of the roughest patches a major film company has ever seen. Their film division was halted and is now headed up by James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, before those two came on, there was a carousel of leaders at the company. One person who apparently tried to exploit that leadership vacuum was Dwayne Johnson. According to Variety, the man behind Black Adam, made several power plays to become the focal point of the comic book juggernaut.
Their reporting states that Johnson went around several higher-up executives in DC to get Henry Cavill‘s cameo at the end of Black Adam, in addition to other demands. Some of these other demands included a producer’s credit on DC League of Super-Pets and a tequila bar at the Black Adam premiere, complete with his own Teremana brand. This and stories of Johnson pitching himself and Cavill as the centerpieces of DC’s film universe, don’t paint a great look for the actor/producer.
As for the future of DC, Gunn and Safran have cleared the deck regarding any current plans. Outside of The Flash, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Blue Beetle, the schedule is currently clear. There are plans for Matt Reeves to continue his Batman trilogy and Gunn is currently writing a Superman film. The old guard of actors and creatives are gone. Some might return in different forms or fashions, but the DC universe as we know it has been rebooted.
We’ll have to see how DC looks in the future, as the slate from Gunn and Safran should come out sometime soon. As for current DC films, Shazam! Fury of the Gods releases on March 17th, 2023, The Flash releases in theaters on June 23rd, 2023, Blue Beetle releases on August 18th, 2023, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom releases on December 25th, 2023.
