Since Warner Bros. first announced plans for a live-action Barbie movie, there’s been a lot of speculation as to what that might look like.
I don’t know about you, but I didn’t see anyone predict a 2001: A Space Odyssey parody would make the cut.
WB released the first teaser trailer for Barbie today. And honestly, I think I have more questions than before. But also I’m more intrigued than ever? Hey, I guess that’s what a good teaser should do. Check it out for yourself below.
Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the IRL Mattel doll. Plot details about the film are being kept under wraps. (And like I said, I don’t think this teaser helps unravel the plot mystery at all.) The film’s IMdB page simply states, “Barbie lives in Barbie Land and then a story happens.”
Beyond Robbie, the film also boasts an impressive ensemble. You can spot several of them in the trailer, including Ryan Gosling’s Ken looking sporty and Simu Liu (who appears to be leading a West Side Story-style dance battle).
The film also stars the likes of Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Emerald Fennell, Ariana Greenblatt, Connor Swindells, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and more.
Barbie comes from director Greta Gerwig, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach.
We don’t have a specific release date yet for the film, but the teaser trailer sets the release window for Summer 2023.
