It’s that time of year again… The time when the Library of Congress announces which movies made the cut for the National Film Registry.
Each year the Library of Congress chooses 25 films to preserve in the registry, based on their cultural or historical significance or their aesthetic importance to the medium. The 2022 entries include Marvel’s Iron Man (2008), Disney’s animated classic The Little Mermaid (1989), and the 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, among others.
“Films have become absolutely central to American culture by helping tell our national story for more than 125 years,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “We are proud to add 25 more films by a group of vibrant and diverse filmmakers to the National Film Registry as we preserve our cinematic heritage. We’re grateful to the entire film community for collaborating with the Library of Congress to ensure these films are preserved for the future.”
This year’s selection of films included 15 features directed or co-directed by filmmakers of color, women, or members of the LGBTQ+ community. A few of these selections include 1990’s comedy House Party and 1988’s Hairspray. The list also includes the 1950 adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, which made José Ferrer the first Hispanic actor to win an Oscar for Best Actor.
Marvel president Kevin Feige also commented on Iron Man’s inclusion on the National Film Registry list.
“Iron Man was the very first film Marvel Studios independently produced. It was the first film that we had all of the creative control and oversight on and it was really make or break for the studio,” said Feige. “The notion that here we are, almost 15 years after the release of Iron Man, and to have it join the Film Registry tells us it has stood the test of time and that it is still meaningful to audiences around the world.”
