When I was growing some of the best times in my life were watching movies. From Star Wars to Tron I couldn’t get enough, but there was one that even to this day catches my attention like no other, and that movie is The Dark Crystal. Last night, not only was I lucky enough to catch The Dark Crystal on the big screen for the first time, but I was also able to take a trip down memory lane by enjoying this 40-year-old classic once again.
The Dark Crystal
This year The Dark Crystal turned 40, but just like a fine wine it just gets better with age. Thought up in a Howard Johnson during a snowstorm by Jim Henson in 1978, this film was already ahead of its time. While some may have called it a family film others looked at it as a dark fantasy and at the time questioned its darkness. I mean you can understand the darkness thoughts after seeing the Skeksis. But once you were introduced to the urRu and the Gelflings you quickly learned that this is a story about life and learning from your mistakes.
One thing everyone could agree on is how groundbreaking this film was. From the amazing animatronics to the puppeteers Henson created a world that just felt lifelike. The film may have had mixed feelings then but now it has a cult-like following and even inspired a new series on Netflix. I mean for those that have watched The Dark Crystal what more can I say? This film is just as amazing now just as it was when I saw it as a kid. So do yourself a favor when you see one of your favorite classics playing on the big screen again, GO SEE IT! Enjoy the memories and the movie. Oh yeah, and for those that have not seen it, what in the hell are you waiting for?
I Want To Hear From You
I tried to keep this article short and to the point. There is no need for a review most of us know about The Dark Crystal. But, what I want to know is your thoughts on this 40-year-old classic. How old were you when you first saw The Dark Crystal? What were your thoughts the first time you saw it? Also, if you were like me and saw it this week for the first time on the big screen, how was your experience?
