The long-anticipated feature adaptation of Wicked is finally shaping up. And today, we’ve got some more exciting casting news. Michelle Yeoh will play Madame Morrible, headmistress of Shiz University.
The Wicked film comes from director Jon M. Chu. It will adapt the popular Broadway musical, which itself serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz and loosely adapts the novel by Gregory Maguire.
Chu’s feature adaptation will actually arrive in two parts, set for Christmas 2024 and 2025 release. The project previously revealed its leads, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda.
In the Broadway musical, Madame Morrible makes Elphaba and Glinda roommates, and is instrumental in sending Elphaba to see the Wizard of Oz. Yeoh’s casting was first reported by Geek Vibes Nation on Twitter, and later confirmed by Variety.
Other confirmed cast members for the dual feature include Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and Ethan Slater as Boq. Jeff Goldblum is also in final talks to portray the Wizard.
Yeoh’s casting comes following the huge success of her sci-fi flick Everything Everywhere All At Once, which will likely prove a frontrunner for awards this season. Her other recent work includes the Netflix feature The School for Good and Evil; Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; and her multiple-season arc on Star Trek: Discovery. She will next appear in The Witcher: Blood Origin on Netflix.
