Disney is bringing back The Princess Diaries for a third installment. Writer Aadrita Mukerji is writing the script for a continuation of the Anne Hatheway -led series as opposed to a reboot or requel. However, Hatheway doesn’t have a deal to return yet, but she has publicly stated a desire to make a third installment. The hope is that she’ll return once it gets past the script stage.
She starred in the 2001 film The Princess Diaries about an American teenager that learns she’s the heir to the throne of Genovia. It’s based on the novel by Meg Cabot and also starred Julie Andrews. It was a smash-hit and earned $165 million at the global box office. That was followed up by The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004.
Mukerji comes from a television background with credits on Quantum Leap, Supergirl, Reacher, and Scorpion.
This has to be a response to the incredible reception that Hocus Pocus 2 got and the viewership numbers it drove to Disney+ in October. That wave of nostalgia for the 90s and 2000s is back, big time.
