David Zaslav has had a rocky start to his tenure as CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery. Between canceling multiple projects and turmoil in the DC Films division, he seems to have righted the ship a bit. He picked James Gunn and Peter Safran to lead DC as a duo. Now, after a conversation with RBC, he gave some details about the future of DC and WB.
I think over the next few years, you’re going to see a lot of growth and opportunity around DC, there’s not going to be four Batmans. And so part of our strategy is drive the hell out of DC, which James and Peter are going to do. I think they’ve thrilled the fans. I think they’re going to thrill you over a period of time.
That’s reassuring, but also concerning for DC going forward. We don’t know about which Batman will be “the one” going forward. DC does have a disconnect with its audience with so many “universes” to keep track of. Marvel has their singular film universe that doesn’t deviate from the plan. DC, however, has Joker taking place in one universe, The Batman taking place in another, and their mainline series taking place in a universe completely different.
It looks like DC is learning from the mistakes of their past and finally focusing on their big characters and trying to get new movies out on time.
We’ll have to see as their film schedule develops.
