Girls5eva will sing again… but you’ll need to tune in to a different streamer to watch them perform. The Peacock original series will jump ship to Netflix for its upcoming third season.

The musical comedy comes from creator, showrunner, and EP Meredith Scardino and executive producers Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond, and Robert Carlock. It premiered on Peacock in 2021 and released its second season on the platform this past spring.

Moving forward, however, Girls5eva will premiere its third season on Netflix. The first two seasons will also be available to stream on Netflix as well. (The streaming deal for seasons 1-2 of the series is described as “co-exclusive,” so fans should be able to watch the first two seasons of Girls5eva on both Peacock and Netflix.)

“Our deepest thanks to Peacock for bringing Girls5eva to life and supporting us creatively at every turn since the first pitch. And we are endlessly grateful to our partners at NBCU for their boundless commitment. Today, we are thrilled to announce that our reunited girl group will be re-reunited at Netflix,” read a joint statement from the show’s executive producers. “We are so thankful to everyone at the streamer who fell in love with our music-filled comedy. We cannot wait to introduce Dawn, Wickie, Summer, and Gloria to the global Netflix audience. Well, not fully introduce, if you look closely, Girls5eva can be seen in the background of the Woodstock ’99 documentary setting a porta potty on fire.”

A change in the streaming landscape?

Girls5eva switching streaming platforms isn’t just a big deal for fans of the series, however. It could mark a significant shift in the streaming landscape overall.

Typically, streamers are very protective of their original content. Though streaming services sometimes rescue network and cable series from cancellation, Girls5eva marks only the second time a streaming original series has jumped to a different streaming platform. (The first was Cobra Kai’s move from YouTube Premium to Netflix.)

Could streaming originals shifting platforms become more common in the industry? Or will Cobra Kai and Girls5eva remain special circumstances? For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
