When it comes to Star Wars it seems we have a lot to choose from these days. From The Mandalorian to Andor there are enough stories out to satisfy any Star Wars fan. Well today Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi was added to that list and it might be one of the best storytelling series out there. Created by Dave Filoni and Starring Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano), Matt Lanter (Anakin Skywalker), Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn), Corey Burton (Count Dooku), also with Janina Gavankar (Pav-ti), and Bryce Dallas Howard (Yaddle); Tales of the Jedi takes us on six emotional and intense short stories about Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku). Thanks to our friends over at Disney+ I was able to get an early screening of the series to review and I will say right now this is some of the best Star Wars storytelling out there!
Star Wars: Tales Of The Jedi
Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi is an animated series of shorts that focuses on Ashoka Tano and Count Dooku. These shorts average between 13 and 18-minutes and are broken down into six episodes with three episodes focusing on each of the Jedi’s stories. Now even though these stories focus on Ashoka and Dooku you get a lot more thanks to the amazing mind of Dave Filoni. Filoni went with a different approach with each of these story arcs. Ahsoka’s arc took us through different times of her life. We see her as a “Baby Ahsoka” and then end up at a very emotional time later in her life that sets her future path. Then we have Count Dooku’s story, which shows us his path to the Dark Side of the Force.
Tales Of The Jedi – “Life and Death”, “Practice Makes Perfect”, and “Resolve”
I have decided to break this review up and talk about the episodes that focus on the characters. So like I mentioned each story is broken up into three shorts. I will start with the Ahsoka Tano sorts “Life and Death”, “Practice Makes Perfect”, and “Resolve”. The first story “Life and Death” takes us back to when Ahsoka was just a baby. Here we learn more about her family and the Togruta culture. This also was the short that was shown at Star Wars Celebration where we learned more about Pav-Ti (Ahsoka’s Mother) and how strong Ahsoka was with the Force at a young age.
The next episode “Practice Makes Perfect” shows Ahsoka training as a young Padawan. She might seem like she is ahead in her class, but Anakin Skywalker sees it differently. I won’t go too much more into this short because well anything else will give it away. Finally, we wrap up her arc with “Resolve”. This story will not only bring a tear or two to your eyes but will also answer some questions we had about Tano in Star Wars: Rebels.
Tales Of The Jedi – “Justice”, “Choices”, and “The Sith Lord”
These three DARK shorts deal with Count Dooku’s path to the Dark Side. In “Justice” we get to meet Dooku with a young Qui-Gon Jinn. We learn quickly that Dooku looks at things very differently than most Jedi and is also willing to push the rules to the limits. Then we head into “Choices”. This short gives us Dooku with Mace Windu. Here we see more of Dooku’s controversial tactics that catch Windu off guard. Also while on this mission Dooku finds out information that really starts to grow a bigger wedge between him and the Jedi.
Now we head to “The Sith Lord”. As much as I want to really dig into this one I won’t. This short is not only dark but extremely emotional as well. Once again you will get some answers to some questions we all have had in the past that you may not now want to be answered. Now I know why Filoni did not want to show any of it during Star Wars celebration.
My Final Thoughts
First off it was hard as hell to talk about any of these shorts without giving everything away. Dave Filoni knock Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi out of the park! These stories were unreal. Each one made you want more. While these stories focused on Ahsoka and Dooku it was all of the other characters and details that were brought in that made the story better. From Qui-Gon to Anakin to Yaddle and Palpatine each short story gave us so many answers to questions we have had for many years. Tales of the Jedi is dark, funny, action-packed, and full of emotions. While this is all good things for a series it is also bad because of how much more you wanted after each story. Oh yeah, I can’t forget about the animation, it was also amazing. It has the Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 look.
I really hope we get more of these shorts. I never thought we would get some of the best Star Wars storytelling from such short episodes. Of course, as of now, there has been no announcement on if this will be the only season, but let’s hope that changes soon. I would love to see more stories from some of our favorites like Darth Maul, Mace Windu, Jar Jar Binks, and Caleb Dume. Also with other series like The Mandalorian and Andor, there could be even more tales to tell. So make sure to do yourself a favor and watch this series you will not be disappointed.

Incredibly well written series of shorts that capture and carry the mythology. In legendary stories there is always a callback to a greater story, time, purpose. Each of these shorts where self contained and yet part of the bigger galaxy without direct reference. Just enough nostalgia to know what is happening. Whether they produce more of these or hire these guys to produce films keep this stuff coming!!!
