It’s official: Harrison Ford is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ford will play General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, with his first appearance as the character set for the next Captain America film.
Industry insider Jeff Sneider and SlashFilm originally reported the news, which has since been confirmed by the trades.
Ford replaces William Hurt in the role, who sadly passed away earlier this year. In Marvel comics, General Ross is a top-ranking military official who comes to lead the team of anti-heroes known as the Thunderbolts.
Marvel previously announced a Thunderbolts film for Phase 5. Ford has not technically been identified by Marvel as appearing in that feature – just Captain America: New World Order so far – but it seems likely that Marvel would make a Thunderbolts movie without the man who assembles the team.
Captain America: New World Order plans to premiere May 2024.
