The veteran actor who gave Hagrid a fatherly touch in his most famous role, Robbie Coltrane, has passed away at the age of 72. He passed away at a hospital near his home in Scotland. He had been in ill health for the past two years.

He’s best known to fans around the world as Hagrid from the Harry Potter series. He played the character from 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone to 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. However, he also has over 100 other film credits including Van Helsing, Krull, National Lampoon’s European Vacation, GoldenEye, and plenty of other fantastic film and TV roles.

He was born Anthony Robert McMillan in Scotland in 1950, but took the stage name Coltrane from the jazz artist John Coltrane.

Robbie Coltrane is survived by two children. Join us in celebrating the man who brought such warmth to Hagrid among other roles in his career.
