It was a day full of surprises when it came to Star Trek today at New York Comic Con. The big news, of course, came from the final third of the panel dedicated to the finale of Picard. The first portion, however, was not without its own surprises. We got our first look at Season Five of Star Trek Discovery, plus a live-streamed visit from Captain Burnham herself, Sonequa Martin-Green. Let’s start with the action-packed peek at Discovery’s upcoming season, which you can watch here:
“Never a dull moment,” indeed. StarkTrek Discovery will once again take to new worlds and new civilizations. This time, however, it will do so with some new faces. Eve Harlow and Elias Toufexis (Shadowhunters). Together they play a new set of Star Trek villains, the Couriers Moll and L’ak, respectively. Also joining Starfleet this season is Callum Keith Renney as gruff, no-nonsense Starfleet Captain Rayner.
Star Trek Discovery Season Five all about journeys
As much as the new season will see Discovery embark on a new adventure, so to will its crew make personal journeys of their own. Wilson Cruz (Dr. Culber) and Anthony Rapp (LT. Commander Stamets) were on scene to talk about how their characters would dive deeper into their relationship in the upcoming episodes. Cruz remarked that portraying the relationship between Hugh and Paul came naturally, “based on the love and adoration” the two actors have for each other as friends.
Martin-Green, for her part, intimated that Burnham’s relationship with Book (David Ajala) remained “complicated” and may, or may not, find resolution. In Star Trek Discovery “you see how hard it is to be captain, and what it costs to sacrifice,” said Martin-Green. Something tells us that Burnham will have to sacrifice even more in Season Five.
