New York Comic Con has been awash in announcements, but as we dive into the season of Halloween, one that has excited me the most is Netflix’s upcoming Addams Family adaptation, Wednesday. From the spooky mind of Tim Burton, the trailer revealed today shows the role will be played by SNL alum Fred Armisen. In the short clip that we saw, Armisen is being Armisen, with his iconic pinched alto voice and childlike excitement. It seems to be a very different take on the character than the icon version played by another SNL alum, Christopher Lloyd, in the 1990’s reboot, and I’m sure fans are eager to compare the two.
With the unveiling of Uncle Fester, Wednesday now has the full Addam’s family tree in place: Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester and George Burcea as the family butler, Lurch. And because Christine Ricci made such a splash as Wednesday in the 1990’s reboots (a role that arguably launched her career), it seemed only fitting that she be included in this adaption, though in a role not often associated with Ricci’s repertoire of macabre characters. We catch a glimpse of her as the perky teacher, Marilyn Thornhill, with cheerful red hair.
Where as the original Addam’s Family tv show and Ricci’s Wednesday showed us a child in elementary school, Ortega’s Wednesday finds herself smack dab in the middle of high school, with all the drama, cliques and mean girls you might expect in a CW series, but this time with monsters and magic. Netflix describes Wednesday as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the murder mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.”
Wednesday drops all eight episodes on November 23rd on Netflix. Forget about Tofurkey and football, I know what I’ll be doing this Thanksgiving.
