It’s been a passion project for Robert Eggers to direct a new adaptation of Nosferatu. It was long thought that Anya Taylor-Joy would star in the film, but now according to Deadline, that’s not the case. Taylor-Joy will not star in the film, it will be Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard. Skarsgard will reportedly be playing Nosferatu in the film, so that’s two horror icons he’ll have on his resume now.
In the new reimagining, the pic is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

Eggers will direct and write the film for Focus Features. F.W. Murnau famously directed the original 1922 classic Nosferatu featuring Max Schrek as the vampire. Werner Herzog also directed his own version of the story in 1979. The original is among the most influential films ever made. The expressionist stylings and proto-horror elements make it essential viewing for any film lover. It was an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker‘s Dracula, and most copies of the film were destroyed at the time. However, some remained, and we’re still able to see the film to this day.
We’ll have to see what Eggers has in store for audiences with Nosferatu.
