At long last, it looks like we get to know when we’re seeing One Piece Film: Red. It may not be the exact date, but it’s close enough for now. Not only that, but we’re getting the info from one of the most unlikeliest of sources: the University of Southern California.

Launch Date Revealed!

Still image of footage from USC Athletics, with an announcement for "One Piece Film: Red" in the bottom bar.
Really, that little bit of info in the bottom bar should be the main news.

Twitter user Orojapan posted a Tweet containing a screenshot from the USCAthletics YouTube channel, depicting the USC vs. Rice match. What happened during that match is completely unimportant as far as I’m concerned. What is important is that little bar at the bottom of the screenshot. As you can see: it’s a banner for One Piece Film: Red. Even better, it actually gives us a release window for the anime film just to the right of the title.

According to that bar, we’ll get to see One Piece Film: Red sometime in October 2022. Combined with other information we received about the anime film, we’ve got our US theatrical release window. Unfortunately, the window doesn’t get any more specific than the month of release. Fortunately, that window is also less than a month away as of this writing, so we likely won’t have long to wait before we get a more specific release date. Tune in back to THS later as we get close to October to find out when we do.

One Piece Film: Red ~ Details

Oh, this is going to mark a return of the onion ninjas, isn’t it?

One Piece Film: Red is the 15th feature-length anime film of the One Piece anime franchise, which is itself the anime adaptation of the fantasy adventure manga of the same name by Eiichiro Oda. Toei Animation (Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Digimon) is the animation studio behind this particular anime film. Gorō Taniguchi is the director, with Tsutomu Kuroiwa writing the screenplay, and Eiichiro Oda himself producing. In fact, this anime film is the one Oda participated in the most, being also the character designer and script reviewer, making this anime film practically canon. Yasutaka Nakata composed the music. Lastly, Crunchyroll has licensed this anime film for its international release.

As for what One Piece Film: Red is about? Well, Crunchyroll has an official synopsis for us. Check it out below:

“Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans—excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks’ daughter.”
