One of my all-time favorite late-80s films is Heathers. The dark teen comedy stars Shannen Doherty, Winona Ryder (Stranger Things), and Christian Slater (Dr. Death) – A list cast!

Ryder plays Veronica, a girl who is part of the popular girl clique at her High School – the Heathers. However, she doesn’t agree with their cruel behavior. When she gets stars dating J.D. (Slater) they plot revenge on the heathers, but it goes too far. Quickly, Veronica realizes that J.D. is intentionally killing students he doesn’t like and it’s up to her to stop him.

In 2009, Heathers: The Musical written by Laurence O’Keefe (Bat Boy / Legally Blonde: The Musical) and Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness) began workshopping musical. Eventually, they did a concert, Los Angeles Debut, and took it to London’s West End. There was even a version of it performed on Riverdale

Now, a taped version is coming to Roku. Directed by Andy Fickman (Kevin Can Wait), the musical was filmed at The Other Palace, where it started its U.K. journey in 2018. This version of the show stars Ailsa Davidson as Veronica Sawyer, and Simon Gordon as Jason ‘J.D.’ Dean, Maddison Firth as Heather Chandler, Vivian Panka as Heather Duke, Teleri Hughes as Heather McNamara.

Filling out the rest of the cast is Mhairi Angus as Martha Dunnstock, Liam Doyle as Kurt Kelly, Rory Phelan as Ram Sweeney, Vicki Lee Taylor as Ms. Fleming/Veronica’s Mom, Andy Brady as Veronica’s Dad/ Kurt’s Dad / Principal Gowan, Oliver Brooks as Ram’s Dad/Big Bud Dean/Coach Ripper, Benjamin Karran as Beleaguered Geek, Chris Parkinson as Hipster Dork/Officer McCord, Jermaine Woods as Preppy Stud/Officer Milner, Eleanor MorrisonasHalliday as Young Republicanette, MaryasJean Caldwell as Stoner Chick, Hannah Lowther as New Wave Party Girl, as well as May Tether as Drama Club Drama Queen.

Welcome to Westerberg High, where Veronica Sawyer is just another one of the nobodies dreaming of a better day. But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true.  Until JD shows up – the mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that everyone fears being a nobody, but its murder being a somebody…

Heathers: The Musical debuts on the Roku Channel on September 16, 2022!
