Well, it seems that Studio Ghibli wants to enter the digital streaming age nowadays. Why else would they decide to make nearly their full anime film library available for renting to a broader audience?
Studio Ghibli’s Digital Debut?
GKIDS is proud to announce that they’re working with Studio Ghibli to release nearly their entire catalogue of anime films. In fact, this is actually the first time the studio’s anime film library is available for digital renting in the US and Canada. As for where you can rent these anime film? Well, GKIDS is making these anime films available on all major digital platforms, which includes Apple TV, Amazon VOD, Vudu, Google Play, and Microsoft.
Each individual Studio Ghibli anime film is available in HD for a retail price of $4.99 per film. Admittedly, at that price, you might be better off just purchasing the anime film outright on DVD or Blu-ray. If you only want to watch it once at a reduced price though, then this might be your solution. You can make these digital rentals starting on August 30, 2022. As of this writing, that’s actually today. So if you want to rent these anime films and discover (or rediscover) Studios Ghibli’s greatest hits, then you can do so now.
As for which Studio Ghibli anime films are available for renting? Well, not quite their entire anime library, as it turns out. There are a few anime films missing from GKIDS’ list, including Grave of the Fireflies and The Red Turtle. How Do You Live? is also missing, of course, because Hayao Miyazaki hasn’t actually finished it yet. Other than those 3 anime films, everything else seems to be present and available for renting. You can find a full list of anime films available below:
