Lili Reinhart stars in a new Netflix film, Look Both Ways. The movie is very reminiscent of the 1998 Gwyneth Paltrow Film, Sliding Doors.
In this version, we meet Natalie (Reinhart) who, in one night, has her life changed forever – or doesn’t. The film shows us two versions of Natalie’s life from the moment of college graduation eve when she finds out she’s pregnant – or isn’t.
On the eve of her college graduation, Natalie’s life diverges into two parallel realities: one in which she becomes pregnant and must navigate motherhood in her Texas hometown, the other in which she moves to Los Angeles to pursue her career.
Look Both Ways Official Synopsis
LILI REINHART CARRIES LOOK BOTH WAYS LIKE A PRO
I’ve said it for years, Lili Reinhart has carried Riverdale on her shoulders for seasons. It was only a matter of time until she was carrying films. Reinhart does a great job playing Natalie. She’s such a grounded actress who wears her emotions on her sleeve. I loved seeing her play someone that isn’t Betty Cooper or a sidekick stripper.
Now that Riverdale is coming to an end, I can’t wait to see where her career takes her.
LOOK BOTH WAYS PROVES A HAPPY ENDING IS ALL IN PERSPECTIVE
While Natalie finds herself on two separate journeys, the viewer is also taken on a perspective adventure. Natalie’s 5-year plan has her moving to Los Angeles after graduation and working in animation. However, when she gets pregnant those dreams are put on hold.
Not so fast! Natalie who doesn’t get pregnant gets to follow those dreams, meet the man of her dreams (or so she thinks), and follow her passion. Wherever it may lead.
But throughout Natalie’s journey, neither scenario is perfect. Pregnant Natalie is so afraid of messing up her daughter and her life, that she neglects everything that makes her happy. Only to realize that what makes her the happiest she deserves.
Los Angeles Natalie’s perfect boyfriend and perfect job are actually anything BUT perfect. However, she eventually finds herself on the other side of the tornado having learned a million lessons in the process.
Is Look Both Ways a female empowerment movie? I don’t think so, and I don’t believe it ever set out to be. For me, the message is that no matter what choices you make, fate has different scenarios for you. So, no matter what choices you make you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
