Unknown Worlds Entertainment has decided to finally reveal what their new Moonbreaker game is all about. Unfortunately, it’s no Subnautica, as far as we know for now. Fortunately, it still looks like a potentially interesting game. Especially with a certain world-famous fantasy and sci-fi author doing the writing for it. Check out the trailer for it below:
Moonbreaker: Details
Unknown Worlds Entertainment, along with their publisher Krafton, is proud to announce Moonbreaker with that trailer above on YouTube. For all of you Subnautica fans out there, this is definitely not a game anywhere close to being Subnautica. Instead, this game is a turn-based strategy game that’s basically a computer version of a tabletop RPG game. It seems to use game mechanics similar to Warhammer 40,000, with your units even being static miniature game pieces just like you’d find in W40k. You can even customize your units with paint jobs using an in-game painting system, exactly like you would do for W40k. This could honestly be a good game idea if they carry it out well.
That trailer doesn’t just give us a sample of the gameplay though. It also gives us a release date or at least an Early Access date. Apparently, Moonbreaker will go into Early Access on September 29, 2022. In fact, you can Wishlist the game for yourself right now on Steam. If you want to find out just what Unknown Worlds has been up to instead of Subnautica-related things, then you might want to check out this game on that date. In fact, they’ve even given us an additional incentive to do so by revealing who’s writing the game’s story in that same trailer.
Moonbreaker: The Latest Entry in the Cosmere Universe? [Speculation]
As that trailer revealed: Moonbreaker will feature a sci-fi story written in close collaboration with Brandon Sanderson. Who is Brandon Sanderson, you might ask? Well, he’s only a world-famous fantasy and sci-fi author best known for his Cosmere novels (which includes the Mistborn series and The Stormlight Archive series) and for the final 3 novels of The Wheel of Time series. In the latter case, the original author Robert Jordan died before he could complete the series, but Brandon Sanderson was chosen by Jordan’s widow and editor to complete The Wheel of Time. That alone should tell you how good of an author he is, even if you’ve never heard of him before.
For me, the most exciting aspect of this is the possibility that Moonbreaker might feature characters and themes from Brandon Sanderson’s other novels. In particular: the Cosmere series. I would love it if characters like Vin, Wax, or Kaladin were to appear in this game as playable units. It might be the closest we’ll ever get to a Mistborn or The Stormlight Archive game. You know, aside from that collaboration with Fortnite (via a Kelsier skin) and that The Way of Kings: Escape the Shattered Plains VR game back on March 2, 2018.
Regardless, this is just speculation until we finally see Moonbreaker in action. Take it with as many grains of salt as you like until then.
