As it turns out, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have their dream cameo for The Mandalorian season 3. That dream cameo turns out to be none other than the creator of Star Wars himself.
Incoming George Lucas Cameo?
As part of an interview with Entertainment Weekly on Twitter, The Mandalorian creators Jon Favreau (seated on the right) and Dave Filoni (seated on the left) commented on how lucky they have been to get all these cameos for the show. Near the end of the video above, they start talking about their ideal dream cameo for the upcoming season 3. This is when Dave Filoni explicitly names George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars himself, as his dream cameo.
As for who George Lucas would be playing in this dream cameo? Well, Jon Favreau does offer his suggestion on the subject, even if it was at the very least half-jokingly. You can read his exact words below:
“He’d have to be the son of Baron Papanoida or something like that. I don’t know, I wouldn’t even speculate on that. It’s hard for me to imagine what that day would be like.”
The Return of Baron Papanoida for The Mandalorian Season 3? [Opinion]
So why did Jon Favreau name the son of Baron Papanoida as a possible cameo option for George Lucas should he ever appear in The Mandalorian season 3? Well, there’s a funny story behind that. You see Baron Notluwiski Papanoida above? Does his face look familiar to you? It should, because that’s none other than George Lucas himself in the flesh.
See, Baron Papanoida is to date George Lucas’ only role in any Star Wars media. Specifically: he appears in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, when Anakin Skywalker meets Palpatine at that Coruscant opera house. Papanoida also makes a second appearance in an episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (“Sphere of Influence”). In fact, that episode is where we actually learn his name. However, Revenge of the Sith still remains his only live action appearance.
I’m unsure if George Lucas would actually agree to a cameo appearance in The Mandalorian season 3 though. He has previously expressed discontent over the way Disney handled the Star Wars franchise he sold to them. However, this was also before The Mandalorian became such a huge hit. It is possible that might change his mind on the subject of a cameo. However, in the absence of any official statement from the creators of the show or George Lucas himself, this is just pure and fanciful speculation. Take it with as many grains of salt as you like while you wait for season 3 to premiere sometime in February 2023.
