The 14th* Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, begins filming season 14 of Doctor Who this November.
(*Well, by the most conventional numbering system, anyways.)
The Hollywood Reporter revealed the planned return to filming for the series today. The long-running sci-fi program’s 14th season will mark Gatwa’s first as the leading Time Lord. It will also feature the return of original revival showrunner Russell T. Davies.
Gatwa takes over the role from the previous regeneration of the Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. Whittaker will make her final appearance as the character during the show’s upcoming 60th anniversary special.
With BBC keeping details of the special and the circumstances of the Doctor’s regeneration tightly under wraps, it’s unclear if Gatwa will play a significant part in the anniversary special. (The previous major special for the show’s 50th anniversary included a brief cameo from then-upcoming Doctor Peter Capaldi, but the plot focused primarily on David Tennant and Matt Smith’s Doctors.)
Prior to landing the role of the Time Lord, Gatwa made waves on Netflix’s Sex Education as Eric. Assuming fans won’t get to see his first season of Doctor Who until late 2023 or even 2024, his role in the also mysterious live-action Barbie movie will be revealed first.
