More fights and fatalities are coming your way with a new installment of Mortal Kombat. The popular game-turned 2021-movie will get a sequel, with Simon McQuoid returning to direct.
The movie was among the first to drop day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max last year. Despite premiering mid-pandemic, Mortal Kombat proved a huge success for New Line Cinema. The feature surpassed box office estimates, pulling in over $23 million on opening weekend. Overall, it made over $84 million at the box office. Mortal Kombat also scored major streaming numbers, quickly rising to rank as one of HBO Max’s most watched titles.
The film’s popularity encouraged New Line to quickly make plans to develop a sequel. Now, with Deadline confirming McQuoid will return to direct, fans are one step closer to their next Mortal Kombat film.
While Greg Russo wrote the 2021 film, Jeremy Slater will pen the sequel. Slater wrote 2015’s Fantastic Four and helped create Marvel’s Moon Knight series, as well as Netflix’s adaptation of The Umbrella Academy.
McQuoid made his feature debut directing Mortal Kombat. He currently has several projects in development, including Sony’s sci-fi thriller Omega.
While several fan-favorite characters made their way into the 2021 film, others didn’t make the cut. So, who do you hope pops up in the sequel? Let us know in the comments below.
