This movie gives “if looks could kill” a whole new meaning. The new Paramount horror film asks, “What makes you smile?”
(Spoiler alert: it looks like the answer for these characters is “a supernatural and undeniable pull to commit violent murder.”)
Watch the first creepy trailer for Smile below.
The movie seems to draw on plots like It Follows and The Ring, tying everything together with a classic horror element: the perfect unsettling smile.
It doesn’t look like a movie that’s taking any big swings for the genre. But, the trailer seems creepy enough to land Smile on any horror fan’s watchlist this fall.
Here’s the official synopsis from Paramount:
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.
Smile comes from writer/director Parker Finn. Sosie Bacon plays the lead role; you probably know her from Mare of Easttown on HBO and 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. The film also stars Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert, and Caitlin Stasey, with Kal Penn and Rob Morgan.
Smile premieres in theaters September 30.
