Now here’s a comedy that can hack it. HBO Max has renewed Hacks for a third season.
The award-winning series follows a legendary Las Vegas comedian, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), and explores the dark mentorship that forms between her and a young comedy writer, Ava (Hannah Einbinder).
The show’s first season received a number of accolades, including awards from AFI, Critics Choice, the DGA, GLAAD, Peabody, and SAG, as well as multiple Emmys. Season 2 recently premiered on HBO Max in May.
“We congratulate Hacks’ extraordinarily gifted executive producers and cast, and our partners at Universal Television. We are overjoyed at the audience and press response to the new season, and glad to give viewers more of this gorgeous, hilarious, moving show,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max.
The series stars Smart and Einbinder in the lead roles. The supporting cast includes Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Jane Adams, Christopher McDonald, Kaitlin Olson, Paul W. Downs, Poppy Liu, Rose Abdoo, Mark Indelicato, Meg Stalter, Angela E. Gibbs, Luenell, Johnny Sibilly, Joe Mande, Ally Maki, and Lorenza Izzo. Season two also introduced new recurring guest stars Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, Ming-Na Wen, and Susie Essman, and guest stars Margaret Cho and Devon Sawa.
Season 2 of Hacks saw an uptick in viewership over season 1 of 125% – no doubt helping secure the series a season 3.
Hacks comes from creators and showrunners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky.
“The first two seasons of HACKS — expertly crafted by Lucia, Paul and Jen —gave us beloved, complex characters who make us laugh and feel deeply. We’re thrilled that our HBO Max partners have renewed this standout series for a third season, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Deborah, Ava and the rest of our outstanding ensemble,” said Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television.
