Get ready to sing (or maybe, swing from your pigtails). Matilda the Musical is coming to Netflix!
The upcoming film adapts the Tony and Olivier award-winning stage musical, which itself comes from the beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl.
The story follows Matilda Wormwood as a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind, and a vivid imagination — and the worst parents in the world. While her parents content themselves with trashy TV and dodgy money-making schemes, she loves to lose herself in the pages of her beloved books. Where they are loud, selfish and unkind she is a quiet observer, thinking up small and cheeky acts of rebellion and revenge.
You can watch the first teaser for Netflix’s Matilda the Musical below.
The teaser offers us a fleeting glimpse of our cast of characters, including Alisha Weir as the title character. Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough appear briefly as Matilda’s terrible parents. We also catch just a glimpse of Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch), Matilda’s kindly teacher.
Beyond providing an idea of the look and musical sound of the film though, this teaser is really a showcase for Emma Thompson’s Miss Trunchbull. Just in this short clip, we can already see her gunning for Matilda. (And inflicting her personal brand of justice, tossing a girl by the pigtails like it’s an Olympic sport.)
Matilda the Musical comes from writer Dennis Kelly and director Matthew Warchus. It includes original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. The cast also includes Sindhu Vee, Charlie Hodson-Prior, Meesha Garbett, Rei Yamauchi Fulker, Winter Jarrett Glasspool, Andrei Shen, and Ashton Robertson.
Netflix plans to release the movie around the holidays this year. Until then, check back to THS for more updates.
