Production is underway on a new comedy film in which Sandra Oh and Awkwafina play sisters on a cross-country road trip to save their kidnapped dog.
(I mean, do you really need more information? I know I’m already sold.)
The as-yet untitled film comes from 20th Century Studios and writer Jen D’Angelo (Hocus Pocus 2). Jessica Yu (This is Us, The Morning Show) will direct.
Here’s the official synopsis provided by 20th Century Studios:
The comedy follows a brilliant but tightly-wound, game show-obsessed young woman, Anne (Awkwafina) and her estranged, trainwreck of a sister Jenny (Oh), who must work together to help cover their mother’s gambling debts. When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide game show champion.
The film will be led by Golden Globe and SAG Award winner Oh and Golden Globe winner Awkwafina. The supporting cast includes Holland Taylor, Jason Schwartzman, Tony Hale, and Will Ferrell. Oh, Awkwafina, and Ferrell also serve as producers on the film. Additional producers include Jessica Elbaum (Booksmart), Maggie Haskins, Itay Reiss, and D’Angelo. Alex Brown (Hustlers) and Erika Hampson (The Photograph) executive produce.
The comedy will wrap production sometime next month, and will premiere in 2023. The film will debut as a Hulu Original in the US, on Star+ in Latin America, and on Disney+ under the Star banner in other territories.
