Get ready to collect coins, dodge shells, and race to the finish line. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge opens at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023.
Universal unveiled a first look at the ride today, which will serve as the signature piece of its upcoming Super Nintendo World. Take a peek behind the wheel in the clip below:
Universal describes the ride with a simple premise: “As part of Team Mario, guests will steer through courses underwater and in the clouds to compete for the Golden Cup while collecting coins to defeat Team Bowser and win.”
Practically, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge will combine actual set pieces and track movements with augmented reality and projection mapping technology. (In other words, like most rides at Universal Studios, it’s a mix between a moving ride and an AR experience.) Most importantly, the ride aims to immerse Nintendo fans in the world of Mario they love, from piranha plants and pipes to Bowser himself.
Even better, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is designed to be a repeatable experience for guests at Universal Hollywood. Depending on how each team plays, the race will have a variety of different outcomes.
In addition to the sneak peek at Bowser’s Challenge, Universal Studios Hollywood revealed an updated timeline for the launch of Super Nintendo World. Previously, it was announced for a 2023 opening; now, Universal has clarified it will open in “early” 2023. (Timed to the release of the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie in April 2023, perhaps?)
