Another actor joins the Spider-Verse. Isabela Merced just boarded Sony’s upcoming feature Madame Web.
Deadline originally reported Merced would join the cast. However, at this time we don’t have any further details about Merced’s character or specific role in the film.
Sony’s Madame Web will tell the origin story of the title character, a woman with powerful psychic abilities that allow her to see across the spider-world. The character comes from the Marvel comics by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr. The film is expected to slot in with the others in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, including Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film.
Dakota Johnson will play Madame Web. Also signed on for the film are Sydney Sweeney and Celeste O’Connor. Like Merced, their roles have yet to be disclosed.
Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the film, with S.J. Clarkson set to direct.
Merced previously lent her voice to DreamWorks Animation’s Spirit Untamed, and appeared in the Netflix thriller Sweet Girl opposite Jason Momoa. She will next appear in Warner Bros.’ Father of the Bride remake. She will also appear in 20th Century’s Romeo and Juliet story Rosaline.
Madame Web plans to release in theaters July 7, 2023.
