It looks like the upcoming Fantastic Four film in development at Marvel Studios is in need of a new director. Jon Watts, director of the Marvel Studios Spider-Man films was originally slated to direct the Fantastic Four reboot. After the success of the Spider-Man films, including $1.89 billion for No Way Home, Marvel Studios certainly had high hopes for Watts’s involvement in the Fantastic Four. A franchise that would be seeing its third iteration after previous attempts were not well received.
WHY THE EXIT?
The exit appears to be amicable with no bad blood between the director and Marvel Studios. Watts has indicated needing a break from superhero films after spending the last several years with Spider-Man.
“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige and Co-President, Louis D’Esposito had a similar sentiment when announcing the news.
“Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”

This news is certainly disappointing for Fantastic Four fans, as there have been high expectations for the franchise now that it is back in the hands of Marvel Studios. Hopefully, this will simply be a bump in the road and another great director will step in and get the project off the ground. Ultimately giving the ‘First Family of Marvel’ the movie adaptation they deserve.
