The HBO series Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty tells the story of the “Showtime Lakers”. The series started up earlier this year, and it’s now getting an order for a second season. It’s based on the book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman. The first season tells the story of the first season of the Showtime Lakers with Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The ten-episode season concludes on May 8th.

Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming had this to say about the renewal:

It’s been a thrill to bring WINNING TIME to life with Adam McKay, Max Borenstein, our phenomenal producing team, and this incredible cast. This series not only tells the riveting story of the Lakers’ rise, but is also a look back at a transformative era in basketball, celebrity, and the city of Los Angeles. We can’t wait to see how this team will tell the next chapter of this dynasty.

We gave Winning Time a very favorable review, praising the performances by John C. Reilly, Quincy Isaiah, Jason Clarke, Adrien Brody, and the rest of the cast.

In addition to a second season renewal, HBO also optioned Pearlman’s follow-up on the Shaquille O’Neal-Kobe Bryant Lakers of the 90s and early 2000s. The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in sports and they have plenty of stories to lean on with a continuing series.

There’s no word on when season two starts filming or if there’ll be any new cast members.
