It’s been over a decade since Marcel the Shell with Shoes On first graced our screens. Now, the trailer for Marcel’s feature-length film has arrived.
The tiny, adorable stop-motion shell with one big eye first debuted on YouTube. Co-created by Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp, their 3-minute clip of Marcel went viral. (The original Marcel the Shell video now boasts over 32 million views.)
2014 brought the announcement that Marcel would head to the silver screen. Now – years later – the little shell’s big adventure is becoming a reality. You can watch the official trailer for Marcel The Shell With Shoes On below.
Slate reprises her original role as the voice of Marcel. She’s joined by Isabella Rossellini, who voices Marcel’s grandmother, Connie.
The trailer shows Marcel begin an epic quest to reunite with his lost family. From internet searches to TV appearances, it seems there’s no lengths this shell won’t go to in order to find where he belongs. Like the original YouTube shorts, the film is set up in a mockumentary format following Marcel’s journey.
Fleischer-Camp appears in the film as the documentary maker. The film also features supporting characters played by Rosa Salazar and Thomas Mann. Real-life media personalities make cameos too, including Conan O’Brien, Lesley Stahl, and Brian Williams.
Slate and Fleischer-Camp co-wrote the screenplay along with Nick Paley. Fleischer-Camp directs the pic, produced by A24.
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On premiered at Telluride in 2021 and recently aired at SXSW. It releases theatrically June 24.
