In the new A24 thriller Men, one woman’s grief retreat goes seriously off the rails.
Jessie Buckley plays the lead role, a woman dealing with the recent death of her husband. She rents a home in the English countryside, clearly hoping to get away from it all.
But it seems like every man in this town has other plans.
This official trailer gives us a lot more structure than the film’s initial teaser. While we still don’t know for sure who (or what) is stalking Buckley’s character, we get more of the film’s sense of claustrophobia. It looks like just about every interaction our lead has goes sour, leaving her stranded and alone in a strange place.
Here’s the official description of Men from A24:
In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Jessie Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in visionary filmmaker Alex Garland’s (Ex Machina, Annihilation) feverish, shape-shifting new horror film.
The film comes from writer/director Alex Garland. Garland previously helmed films like Ex Machina and Annihilation, as well as FX series Devs.
Buckley recently scored a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for The Lost Daughter. Her other recent work includes the Fargo TV series and the Charlie Kaufman film I’m Thinking of Ending Things.
Men premieres in theaters May 20.
