As we know, Dune 2 is currently in pre-production, and Florence Pugh (Black Widow) is being looked at for the role of Princess Irulan. While I’m a huge fan of Pugh, I am getting a little tired of seeing her in everything. So, I wanted to put together my own list of women I feel could also do a great job in the role.

WHO IS PRINCESS IRULAN?

We first have to start with who Princess Irulan is in the Dune series. She’s the oldest daughter of the 81st Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV and Anirul. The only description we get of the character is through Paul’s eyes, which are basically tall, blonde, green-eyed, with “patrician” beauty. Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) later notes that Irulan has eyes “that looked past and through him”.

To me, this description is pretty vague, and I understand why their top choice is Florence Pugh, but it’s open to many interpretations.

ANYA TAYLOR JOY

Another amazing actress with incredible eyes that can look right through a person to play Princess Irulan. Ana can wear any color hair, pull off mysterious, and regal with non-conventional beauty. She also looks age-appropriate next to Timothee Chalamet and his baby face.

ALEXANDRA DADDARIO

Alexandra Daddario made a name for herself in the Percy Jackson films, as well as the Baywatch movie. She’s even deep into the drama world with True Detective and The White Lotus. She has experience in both fantasy and drama, which is the balance you need to dive into the world of Dune and Princess Irulan.

Sydney Sweeney has won the hearts of the world with her character on Euphoria. Her eyes tell the story of the words her character doesn’t say. With someone described with regal beauty and killer eyes, she 100% fits the bill for Princess Irulan.

ELLE FANNING

We already know Elle Fanning is an incredible actress. We also know she can pull off the “patrician” beauty with her work as Catherine The Great on The Great. As a huge fan of her work, I would love to see her in more things. 

Now, my last choice is going to be wildly controversial seeing as Dune is very much a white savior story. So, changing the ethnicity of this character to a person of color does change the narrative of the books. However, it seems the film is already doing that.

YARA SHAHIDI

One of the best upcoming actresses we have to date. Yara Shahidi is incredibly smart, politically minded, and absolutely stunning. This role wouldn’t be much of a stretch for her, but I think she would absolutely crush it.
