DC’s Blue Beetle has added three new cast members: Harvey Guillén, Belissa Escobedo, and Bruna Marquezine.
The Wrap reports the trio will join the superhero film, which marks DC’s first movie starring a Latino character. They will join previously announced lead Xolo Maridueña. Check out details about each role below.
- Brazilian actress Marquezine will play Penny, Blue Beetle’s female lead and Jaime’s love interest.
- Escobedo will play Milagros Reyes, the younger sister of lead character Jaime Reyes. She recently completed work in a lead role in Disney’s Hocus Pocus 2. Her other credits include Hulu’s Sex Appeal and American Horror Stories.
- Currently, details about Guillén’s role are being kept under wraps. (Presumably the mystery means his role will prove significant to the film.) Guillén is best known for playing vampire familiar/slayer Guillermo on FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.
Blue Beetle follows Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes. After Jaime discovers the Blue Beetle scarab, it comes alive and attaches itself to his spine. This gives him a special suit of armor which can be modified to make him stronger, faster, and well – more superhero-like, basically.
The film comes from writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and director Angel Manuel Soto.
Blue Beetle will premiere in theaters August 18, 2023.
