Looks like it’s finally time for our boy Renfield to get his spot in the limelight. Move over Dracula, because Universal Studios is finally giving us a release date for his lackey’s film.

A Lackey No More?!

I am minion, hear me lithp!

The Hollywood Reporter has just reported that Universal is finally giving us a release date for when we’ll see Renfield. Apparently, we’ll see the lackey of all lackeys (next to Igor) lisp his way into action on April 14, 2023. As of this writing, that’s over a year and a month away, so you’re in for a pretty long wait. But hey, at least the end is in sight, just like the titular lackey’s terms of service. Now if only he could get over his relationship with Dracula himself.

Renfield: Details

Hello, counselor? My minion is leaving me? What do I do?

Despite Renfield being so far from release, we actually know a surprising amount about it. The actual plot of the film is that the titular Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), after working for Count Dracula (Nicholas Cage) for who knows how long, decides to call it quits after he falls in love with a “feisty traffic officer” Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina). As you can tell, this vampire story takes place in the modern-day, rather than in 1897 when the book takes place. The story is, amusingly, classified as a dark fantasy horror-comedy, so you might expect as many laughs as you will scream of terror. Maybe.

Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) directed Renfield, basing the story off of the original pitch by Robert Kirkman (Outcast, Invincible). The main character himself is based on the character of the same name from the Dracula novel by Bram Stoker. With a production team like this, combined with the source material, it’ll hopefully make for a pretty decent film. Maybe it’ll even outdo the sci-fi film starring Adam Driver (Star Wars sequel trilogy (yes, he was Kylo Ren)) 65, which will have a theatrical release on the exact same day Renfield does.
