Sony’s Kraven the Hunter solo film is shaping up pretty nicely. They have three of the principal members of the cast in Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven), Fred Hechinger (Chameleon), and Russell Crowe. Up until now, we didn’t know much about Crowe’s involvement in the film, but our friends at The Illuminerdi might’ve found what Crowe’s part is. According to them, it’s very likely that Crowe is playing Nikolai Kravinoff. Kravinoff is, of course, the father of Sergei Kravinoff, AKA Kraven, and Dmitri Smerdyakov, AKA Chameleon.
In the comics, Nikolai and his wife Anna were Russian aristocrats whose lives were turned upside down by the Russian Revolution. Dmitri is an illegitimate son that Nikolai had with a servant named Sonya Smerdyakova. Both Nikolai and Anna were forced out of Russia during the revolution and eventually ended up in the United States. Both Nikolai and Anna died, orphaning Sergei and Dmitri.
Sergei eventually becomes Kraven the Hunter after a time in Africa, where he finds his talents for hunting, tracking, and gains superhuman abilities from a herbal elixir. While the film Kraven the Hunter might follow these details slightly, the plot is under wraps from Sony. If it’s anything like the other Sony “Spider-Man Universe” films, it’ll follow the origins of the character in this first installment. Historically, Kraven is more villain than anything else, especially when it comes to Spider-Man. However, Sony spun Venom into an anti-hero with their portrayal of the character in both of his movies. So anything is possible when it comes to Kraven.
Kraven the Hunter is set for release on January 13th, 2023.
