Empire of the Wolf #4 Review
The Empire of the Wolf story wraps up in this fourth and final issue, and it does not disappoint!
Admittedly, by the time we arrive at the end of this arc, there aren’t really many twists and surprises left. But fans will get exactly the kind of content they want from this resolution.
While Eight, Eleven, and the two Rose Tylers have been somewhat at odds with each other throughout this story, here is where everyone finally comes together to play on the same team. And it’s as satisfying as you’d expect! Personally, I’ll never get tired of seeing two different Doctors bounce ideas off each other. The “we’re literally of the same mind, so we’re only vocalizing half the plan” bit just hits for me every time. I think it feels especially gratifying in Empire of the Wolf, seeing as Eight and Eleven have been at odds with one another from the beginning.
Similarly, this last chapter sees Rose and her Empress counterpart finally team up. Rose Tyler kicking ass? Always great. Two Rose Tylers kicking ass? Even better!
Issue #4 also does a great job of paying tribute to the Doctor Who TV series. We catch glimpses of quite a few important flashback moments, from Rose’s first meeting with the Doctor (hello, Nine!) to Eleven’s first encounter with the young Amy Pond. The story doesn’t linger on these moments, so it doesn’t pull you out of the current plot. It just sprinkles them in in a way that adds more emotional resonance to the current events.
And of course, that emotional resonance continues as this story resolves. The Empress, a changed woman, vows to find a better way to help the world. Eight and Eleven come to an understanding. And (maybe most importantly), Rose finds her way back to her universe, her Doctor, and her daughter.
Overall, Empire of the Wolf is a charming story that will appeal to a ton of Doctor Who fans: whether you love Eight, Eleven, or Rose, classic villains, emotional conflict, or just some TenRose romance and domesticity.
