Move over, Nic Cage. There’s a new treasure hunter in town. Catherine Zeta-Jones will co-lead the new National Treasure series on Disney+.
The Oscar winner joins Lisette Alexis in the series. Alexis plays Jess, a DREAMer who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.
Zeta-Jones will play Billie, a woman who transformed herself from penniless orphan to a shrewd (and stylish) businesswoman and adventurer. Now a badass billionaire and black market antiquities dealer, she’s a treasure hunter who lives by her own code. She’s used to getting what she wants – and she wants that treasure.
In addition to Alexis and Zeta-Jones, the National Treasure series regulars include Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, and Jordan Rodrigues as the friends Jess recruits to help her on her treasure hunt. Lyndon Smith also stars as an FBI Agent assisting their quest.
The series comes from writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley. Mira Nair will direct the pilot.
The original National Treasure film starring Nicolas Cage premiered back in 2004. Ben Gates stole the Declaration of Independence – and the eyes of audiences, landing the film a 2007 sequel. Though a third Cage-led National Treasure film has long been discussed, it appears Disney will focus on this new series for now.
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original films, will executive produce the upcoming series.
Zeta-Jones won an Oscar for Chicago. She recently starred in the Lifetime original movie Cocaine Godmother based on the true story of the notorious drug lord, Griselda Blanco.
Production on National Treasure will begin later this month in Baton Rouge. The series will later stream exclusively on Disney+.
Fans of the original two films can also stream those on Disney+ now.
